Our take
Tanzania's northern circuit is the classic safari for a reason: Ngorongoro Crater is the surest place in Africa to see a lot of animals in one day, and the Serengeti is the Serengeti. Six-guest vehicles are the detail that matters most. Globus states plainly that the roads are rough and that game viewing carries a signed waiver, and the Great Migration is typically in the Serengeti from late November to July — pick dates with that in mind.

The origin of the tradition dates to British colonialism in Africa in the 18th century and was born out of necessity rather than enjoyment. Containing quinine-infused tonic and gin, colonizers drank it to ward off malaria. As the British Empire expanded into Africa, the popularity of gin and tonic spread with it. Today, Sundowners mark the transition from day to night.

Ngorongoro Crater is technically a caldera—the world’s largest unflooded one, at more than 2,000 feet deep with a floor covering over 102 square miles. Game viewing here is fantastic, as most of the animals stay in this area year round, affording the opportunity to see lion, hyena, hippo, elephant, as well as the best chance to see the rare black rhinoceros. - Great Migration
- The Great Migration is a natural event with herds typically in the Serengeti from late November to July. Movements and river crossings of migrating herds can be challenging to predict year to year. When possible, we’ll modify game viewing when advised of reported sightings.
- Game drives
- All game viewing is done at your own risk and requires a signed liability waiver prior to travel. Due to rough driving on/off road and in/between game parks, this vacation is not recommended for guests with serious back problems or mobility issues. The safari vehicles are not air conditioned and have high ground clearance, requiring some agility when getting in and out.
- Operator's note
- Internal flights have a strict maximum guest weight limit of 265 lbs. / 120 kgs. Any guests weighing more than the limit may be required to purchase an additional seat. Globus Tour Operations must be advised of any guests weighing more than the limit prior to final payment to ensure space can be confirmed.

Is airfare included?
No. Every price on this page is land-only. We quote flights from Fort Lauderdale or Miami with your dates, and Globus can add airport transfers when the air is on their booking.
When is the Migration in the Serengeti?
Globus's note says herds are typically in the Serengeti from late November to July, with river crossings hard to predict. Ngorongoro Crater has resident game year-round, so every departure sees plenty; the Migration is the variable.
Do we need a visa or shots?
U.S. passport holders need a Tanzanian visa, which can be obtained online in advance. Yellow fever and malaria precautions depend on your route and health — see a travel doctor early; we send current requirements when you book.
How much walking is there?
Expect guided walking tours most days, often on cobbles, steps and uneven ground. If that is a concern, tell us before you commit and we will talk it through rather than hope for the best.
Which dates are cheapest?
Prices vary by departure — the dates table on this page is read from Globus's own feed, so what you see is current. Shoulder-season departures are usually the lower-priced ones; any Small Group departures cost more.
