Three Local Facts That Shape the Trip
You can sail from your own city — at a certain size. Carnival runs year-round service from the JAXPORT terminal, mostly four- and five-night Bahamas sailings, and Norwegian adds seasonal service in the winter months. Short sailings from twenty minutes away are an unusually low-friction way to take a first cruise, test whether your family likes cruising, or get away over a long weekend without burning a week of leave.
The tradeoff is fleet size. The newest and largest ships, and the longer seven-night Caribbean itineraries, sail from Port Canaveral — about two and a half hours south — and from the South Florida ports beyond it. For a lot of Jacksonville families the honest answer is that both belong in the plan: JAXPORT for the short trip, Canaveral when the itinerary matters more than the drive.
JAX is a comfortable airport with a short international list. Domestic service is solid, but nonstop international routes from Jacksonville are limited, and there is no nonstop service to Europe. Most Caribbean, Mexico and transatlantic trips from here route through Atlanta, Charlotte, or a South Florida airport. That isn't a problem — it just means connection timing is part of the plan rather than an afterthought, especially with kids or with a group arriving from several cities.
This is a military town. Naval Station Mayport and NAS Jacksonville mean a large share of the families here are active-duty, retired, or veteran households, often planning around leave windows and schedules that can move.
Military Rates — How They Actually Work
Most major cruise lines and several resort groups publish military rates. What people usually don't know is how conditional they are, and that is where an agent earns their keep.
Eligibility varies by supplier. Some rates cover active duty only. Others include retired members, veterans, reservists, spouses, or dependents — and the definitions genuinely differ from one line to the next. The right question is never “is there a military discount,” it's “which of these suppliers has one that covers your household, on these dates.”
The rate has to be applied at booking. Military rate codes are attached when the booking is made and verified against documentation. Trying to add one after the fact usually means cancelling and rebooking at whatever price is available that day.
A military rate is not automatically the best price. A promotional fare with onboard credit or included perks often beats the military rate outright. We price both and tell you which one wins for your sailing — that comparison is the actual work.
Deployment and schedule changes need to be planned for up front. Change and cancellation terms vary by supplier and by fare type, and some fares are far more forgiving than others. If there is real chance your dates move, that should shape which fare you book and what insurance you carry — decided before you pay a deposit, not after.
